Department Information
The department of gastroenterology and hepatology was established In 2018, when the
current head of department joint Sahiwal medical college, initially the department started
providing outdoor patients services independently in march 2018, and soon become the well
established OPD with all the medicines and vaccination for hepatitis in the region. The
department has the facility of endoscopic procedures in DHQ and GHAQ hospital free of
cost. Uptil now thousands of patients of hepatitis and other gastrointestinal disorder have
been treated vaccinated and endoscopy done. This led to a significant improvement and
continuous enhancement of diagnostic modalities.
Department Achievements
- In 2018, department has provided endoscopy and colonoscopy facilities to patients by
experienced staff and well trained technicians

The commencement of quantitative PCR for hepatitis B & C after proper screening
was another achievement of this department
- Uptil now, thousands of patients have
been screened for hepatitis

It efficiently catered increasing volume of screening test with excellent quality

Department had started providing full vaccination and medication facility for both
hepatitis B & C to this region

Educational Facilities
Department is fortunate enough to have a committed core of doctors, technicians and
support staff. The department is presently headed by Assistant Professor Dr Sajjad Hussain
Sabir. Other teaching faculty includes Senior Consultant Dr Muhammad Usama and Dr
Kanita Safah. Department is hereby providing quality teaching and diagnostic services.
Continuous learning and development opportunities are available for the working force here.
The Department has a strong research culture, and devoted team members are actively
involved. The Gastroenterology team is committed to excellence and pursuing this academic
mission with full devotion.
Study Plan
Currently, the department has weekly schedule of HO’s and PGR assessment, weekly
academic roasters and presentations. There is a journal club meeting on weekly basis with
proper discussion of clinical cases and improving the clinical abilities of junior staff.
Gastroenterology team is constantly striving to improve the quality of diagnostic services
as evidenced by a substantial rise in this field over the last few years.
Future Vision
With a vision of making this department, a state of art center for undergraduate and post
graduate teaching and training, a special emphasis on educational activities, and faculty
development is given. Accreditation of this department was applied. Successful visit by CPSP
was also conducted with the hope of gaining recognized status soon.
